Hanging Rings

Today, a friend of mine who’s slightly pregnant led a group of us with a trellis building exercise. The following sonnet is based upon reflection of the construction

It’d be simple to liken the hanging rings
to the circles, cycles, from conception
through to final breath; how life’s reception
greets and guides us. As words through soft lips sing
thoughtful melodies about deep things
though dark days twirl with warped deception
light and life rings with few exceptions.
It’d be simple to liken the hanging rings
to such things, though they’re spray coloured spokes, rims
attached to beams with cable ties and twine
metal sinking into ground, up to brim
packed in tight, waiting for bean stalks, vines.
Trellis to usher in life; no grand hymn
though fragment portraying greater life-line
